A principal feature of the Dentons SSAS is the flexilibity it provides when it comes to investment options. An extensive range of opportunities is listed below: for more detailed information please click on the relevant tab.

A minimum fund value of £50,000 is required.

Standard assets.

We consider the following investments to fall under the category of 'standard'. A minimum fund value of £50,000 is required.

Funds and Equities

  • Stocks and shares listed or dealt on any HM Revenue & Customs recognised stock exchange including:
    • equities
    • fixed interest securities issued by governments or other bodies
    • debenture stock and other loan stock
    • warrants (for equities)
    • permanent interest bearing shares
    • convertible securities.
  • Alternative Investment Market (AIM): we treat AIM stocks in the same way as for unquoted shares: please read our guidance notes and complete the relevant form
  • Equities traded on a recognised overseas stock exchange
  • Offshore funds recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
  • Trustee investment bonds
  • Authorised unit trusts that do not hold residential property
  • Shares in investment trusts
  • Authorised Open Ended Investment Companies (OEICS)

UK commercial property (including land, whether devopment land, farmland or forestry). More complex arrangements include where there are multi-participants and/or where a mortgae is required. Our Commercial Property Questionnaire will need to be completed in all cases.


  • Borrowing can be taken out by the pension scheme trustees to help buy a permitted asset provided it is on commercial terms and within HMRC limits. Borrowing is limited to 50% of the SSAS fund value.

Deposit accounts

  • Deposit accounts with any authorised financial institution.


  • Endowment policies traded by a person regulated by the FCA (traded endowment policies or TEPs)
  • Depositary Interests (including CREST depositary Interests)
  • Individual pension accounts (IPAs)
  • Insurance company managed funds and unit-linked funds
  • Real estate investment trusts (REITs)
  • Exchange traded funds (ETFs)
  • Investment Grade gold bullion (subject to conditions)
  • National Savings and Investments products (NS&I).

Non-standard assets.

The following assets will require comprehensive information in order to assess whether or not it is an acceptable asset and if any conditions need to apply.

  • Property syndicates
  • Hedge funds* ^
  • Commercial loans to UK limited companies (secured)*
  • Unregulated collective investment schemes (UCIS)* ^
  • Loans to a sponsoring employer*

The investments outlined below are subject to a maximum holding of up to 50% of the SSAS fund value:

  • Unquoted UK equities*
  • Commercial loans to UK limited companies (unsecured)*
  • Intellectual property*
  • Contracts for difference (CFD)^**
  • Foreign exchange (FX) - including FX spot and FX forward^**
  • Futures^
  • Warrants^ - including both 'put' and 'call'.

^ For these investments you must be able to evidence that you are a sophisticated investor or high net worth individual by completing and returning our relevant form before we carry out the relevant asset due diligence.

** We will only accept FX and CFD broking accounts if they are a balanced holding as part of a collective investment scheme or a portoflio with an FCA regulated discretionary fund manager, which has been approved by Dentons.

Please note:

Unacceptable assets.

Although we always aim to be as flexible as possible enabling clients to take advantage of a wide range of investments opportunities, there are some investments that we do not accept within our SSAS:

  • Any taxable moveable property - defined by HMRC as residential property and tangible moveable property (including personal chattels)
  • Commodities
  • Overseas unquoted equities
  • Off-plan hotel rooms
  • Bed & Breakfast units
  • Carbon credits
  • Cloud lending
  • Land banking
  • Storage pods
  • Individual hotel rooms
  • Individual CFD and FX accounts
  • Litigation funding.

Please note: This is not an exhaustive list. If you have a specific investment in mind then please talk to us. We'll do what we can to make it happen.

All non standard investments are considered on a case by case basis, however if any are declined we will always give a clear explanation as to why.
